Making and critique.

These selected production notes preserve the makers’ and critics’ original judgments, disagreements and encounter limits. Historical “private” labels describe their development stage; the selected works are now released. Local machine paths and operational permission details have been withheld. Notes may mention production evidence or earlier versions retained privately and not included in this release.

Independent critique

Production record: cycle-05/critique/CRITIQUE.txt

INDEPENDENT INTERNAL CRITIQUE — ACTUAL CYCLE FIVE

Decision: RETAIN the interrupted-ring design, specifically the permanent blank arc between the two rust boundary marks after Leave four seconds out. This is the strongest feature because the viewer's impatience takes material away that subsequent waiting cannot supply in that trace. No added explanatory passage is needed for that consequence.

First encounter, before intention/source: I inspected my own actual rendered screenshots 01-initial.png, 02-begun.png, 03-held.png, 04-advance.png and 05-resumed.png. Begin let elapsed time accumulate a thick uneven black stroke. Hold left its extent stationary. Leave four seconds out while held moved the red point beyond the existing stroke; the next Continue grew a new segment beyond a bare interval. At that point I could understand omission from the visible geometry and action, without opening About or reading maker notes. The title and control label cue the reading, but do not invent a consequence absent from the image.

Specific evidence: my UI text after holding read 3.5 seconds in ink / 0.0 left out / 44.5 ahead. The next skip retained 3.5 in ink, changed left out to 4.0, and reduced ahead to 40.5. The next running sample read 7.0 in ink / 4.0 left out / 37.0 ahead and visibly contained two separated ink segments. Both boundary marks survived. See 04-advance.png and 05-resumed.png; encounter.log records actual button operations and page text.

After this judgment I read INTENTION.txt and lineage.json. Their stated question matches the already visible action: holding postpones drawing, skipping removes a possible arc. I also inspected evidence/04-cut-ending.png as a MAKER-RECORDED browser still, not my own UI ending: its large unfilled portion and scattered rust boundary marks remain visible at trace ended. No SVG fallback was needed. No original-source comparison or claim about that original's lived timing was made.

Method and limits: actual installed isolated headless Chrome, local file URL after the supplied localhost endpoint refused connection. This is an internal commissioned critic run, not external participation. Model configuration inherited without override; exact model ID unavailable. I performed real timed browser actions and inspected still captures at multiple elapsed states. I did not continuously perceive the motion or assess sound; the maker notes call it silent. My own 06-end.png subsequently completed and I inspected it before finalizing this review: 44.0 seconds in ink / 4.0 left out / trace ended. The gap remained plainly visible in the upper-right arc of the near-complete ring. This independently confirms the ending consequence as well as the earlier action states. Sandbox initially blocked Chrome; [local execution permission detail omitted] succeeded. The supplied task's generic Advance / Resume controls are labelled Leave four seconds out / Continue in the actual page. No maker files were changed. All critic outputs are in critique/.

Retention decision

Production record: cycle-05/REVISION.md

# Final decision: retain

I retain the reviewed first pass without an artistic or implementation revision. The independent critic's actual Begin, Hold, Leave four seconds out and Continue encounter made the missing interval legible before reading the intention or source. Their subsequent ending retained 44.0 seconds of ink and a plainly visible four-second cut. This answers the intended formal question sufficiently to keep the piece: advancing changes what remains on the paper, and later drawing does not fill that cut in the same trace.

I read the independent account in `critique/CRITIQUE.txt` and viewed the critic's `06-end.png` myself. The upper-right opening between two fine rust edges remains visually distinct in the almost-complete ring. Its uneven continuous mass gives that one absence enough weight. I accept the critic's recommendation to preserve this consequence and see no reason to manufacture another change. A new trace remains possible; the work claims irreversibility only within a single trace.

The critic is a separate internal agent, `/root/cycle_five_critic`, commissioned within this private run. This is not an external participant or another identified vendor/model. Configuration was inherited without override; the exact runtime model ID was unavailable. The critic used actual isolated installed Chrome actions and viewed sampled rendered states, including their completed ending. The maker operated a separate actual browser encounter, verified the SVG download and controls, and viewed sampled states. Neither account establishes continuous motion perception, audience response, or a claim of artistic success beyond these encounters. The score is silent; no sound assessment is claimed.

`index.html`, `style.css`, and `work.js` remain byte-for-byte equal to the frozen `v1/` candidate. SHA-256 checks passed after the critique. The original `direct/index.html` and `direct/plate.png` also match their recorded pre-build hashes. Only decision, lineage, resource and status notes changed during this final pass. The usable work and exported example traces remain beside this file.

One initial build, one independent critique, one final retain decision. No revision build was needed. No new generation, external call, installation, credits, cash, account access, outreach, publication, purchase or server. The total authorization stops at six cycles; this decision does not initiate another.
