# Cycle 06 internal critique: Before the Name Decision: REVISE the cut; retain the artistic question. This is a recommendation, not a new render or permission to exceed the authorized cycle limit. ## Encounter and limits Independent internal Codex critic, inherited configuration; exact model ID not exposed. No outside participant or audience study. One bounded pass. First visual encounter was the supplied contact sheet of rendered samples at 02, 10, 16, 21, 26, 33, 38, and 45 seconds, before reading source image, prompt, lineage, or maker script. A second contact sheet was then decoded directly from the MP4 at those same times and visually checked. These are sparse static observations, not a continuous film experience. Playback was attempted through Playwright MCP, which reported an occupied browser profile. One materially different repair used installed standalone Chrome with a temporary profile; launch aborted. The occupied MCP profile was neither changed nor killed. No playback clock was obtained, and no continuous perceptual viewing is claimed. Timing below is verified from the file and maker's edit schedule, not felt duration. Failed playback script retained as evidence; it produced no playback.json. ffprobe confirms 48 seconds, 1152 × 896, 24 fps, one video stream and no audio stream. MP4 SHA-256: ce13f3b8fd0029c6f48860af31581a987aa774b98e30aee22528f78b7957860d, matching BUILD.json. Evidence: ffprobe.json and decoded-contact-sheet.jpg in this directory. ## Before source/process comparison The initial samples show a dark circular form within pale material, a vertical line above it, a short narrow continuation beneath it, and warm light behind its lower edge. Enlarging the visible area upward adds more pale material and crossing linework. Black at 21 seconds separates that reveal from a return to the original small aperture at 26 seconds. The later lower crop introduces a warm circular floor patch and a broad angular shadow. The 45-second sample admits the surrounding room. My static reading initially favored a suspended disc or attached circular object. The lower light patch adds a plausible opening-related account without resolving it. This is a critic's interpretation of visible cues, not a claim that viewers change their minds at those times. The visible form itself remains fixed throughout the sampled frames. ## Source, prompt, and process comparison Only after those observations did I inspect firefly-opening.png, FIREFLY_PROMPT.txt, LINEAGE.json, BUILD.json, and make_film.py. The prompt asks for three incompatible floor shadows and a horizontal thread disappearing at the cut edge. The source instead contains one composite floor shadow/light patch, prominent vertical attachment linework, and a crosswise line continuing across the paper. The requested shadow contradiction is not established by the image; lineage explicitly acknowledges this. The film accurately preserves that source and changes access to its evidence through a soft rectangular matte. The script confirms: small aperture, expansion upward, fade to black, return to the same aperture, expansion downward, then the whole image. The cropping has a real informational function: upper context supplies apparent suspension, while lower context supplies possible transmitted light. It therefore does more than decorate the photograph. But it changes the available explanation more convincingly than it demonstrates a change from opening to object. The repeated aperture and eventual full image can also be understood as a staged inspection of an already ambiguous object. Smoothness and whether the holds earn their duration remain unassessed without continuous viewing. ## One consequential critique The opening crop spends the classification ambiguity too early. It already includes both a line meeting the circle from above and a narrow continuation below. Those attachment cues are present before the upper reveal, so that reveal mainly extends an object reading already available at the start. The lower reveal then adds a competing light account; it does not give clear evidence that the film has crossed the stated perceptual threshold. Revise around one precise change: start with the circular edge and adjacent paper while excluding both attachment lines, then admit the decisive surrounding cue. Retain the inquiry into how context changes the reading of one fixed form. Evaluate the revision by whether the newly admitted cue changes the critic's account, rather than by the elegance of the matte. Do not claim a proven perceptual reversal from this pass. No further version was made or requested by this critic. The artistic question and economical form are worth pursuing. This cut remains a provisional experiment, not demonstrated evidence of timed perceptual reclassification. Silence is part of the inspected file; no listener response or sound effect is asserted. ## Scope receipt Only critique/ files were created. Maker and source files were read only. No external network request, installation, new model call, generation credit, account/credential use, publication, outreach, or full render was performed.
# Cycle six maker decision **Accept the critic's proposed revision, with different partial-edge starting windows for the two passages. Select v2 as a provisional private film.** This is the cycle's one revision/retain/reject decision. No third build or further critic round is authorized by this decision. The distinct internal critic's [review](critique/REVIEW.md) found that v1's opening crop already showed lines meeting the circle above and below. The upper reveal therefore extended a reading already present instead of admitting its decisive cue later. I agree: the opening had spent information the film purported to withhold. The revision begins with only the left circular edge and adjacent paper. After the dark interval, the second passage begins on the right edge. Neither starting window includes the attachment cues, including the matte's feathered margin. The upward and downward expansions then admit those cues. This is one change to the editorial starting conditions; the film's duration, holds, two-part structure, final complete image and source remain the same. The critic first encountered rendered samples before reading source material or process. They also decoded their own contact sheet from the MP4 and checked the file metadata. Continuous playback failed through both the occupied Playwright profile and a separate temporary Chrome attempt. The critique concerns sparse static frames and the verified edit schedule; it does not assess felt duration or establish a timed change of perception. The maker's revision check likewise concerns the actual decoded output and whether the first windows exclude the specified cues. It is not a fresh independent critique or proof that viewers reclassify the circle. The final complete image may still settle too much, and the holds may still be overlong. Those are retained artistic risks pending continuous viewing; no success is manufactured by naming them resolved. The original source, v1 movie, script, page, lineage, build receipt and sampled frames are preserved. This cycle makes no new generation call and spends zero credits or cash. The inherited source's original Firefly Image 5 generation cost 10 Adobe credits on October 16, 2026.
# Before the Name: one bounded revision The critic's pressure was concrete: v1 showed its apparent attachment lines before asking the upper reveal to matter. The maker accepted that pressure and changed the two seed windows. | Passage | v1 starting window | v2 starting window | | --- | --- | --- | | Before upward reveal | Whole circle plus lines above/below | Left arc and adjacent paper, x=465–532, y=405–484 | | Before downward reveal | Same window again | Right arc and adjacent paper, x=590–654, y=423–492 | The soft matte extends at most 16 pixels beyond each window; neither opening region admits the upper line at the circle's top or the continuation below its bottom. As the windows grow, these cues enter later. These are spatial editing coordinates in a generated raster, with no claim of physical reconstruction. The change has an observable informational consequence. It does not demonstrate a perceptual reversal. The maker and critic have encountered selected frames, not an uninterrupted film screening. The 48-second structure, silent soundtrack, stationary source and final full image remain. There were two total builds: one first pass and one revision. An initial patch failed validation before changing the script or running a build; it did not generate a third artifact. Separate CPU timing was added to the revision. First-build elapsed time was 12.68 seconds; first-build process CPU time was not separately recorded. Final build resources are in `BUILD.json` and `MANIFEST.json`. Preservation: the unchanged source retains its original hash; the v1 movie stays at `before-the-name-v1.mp4`; v1 code/page/lineage/build receipt/contact sheet/frames are in `v1/`. The selected page points to `before-the-name-v2.mp4`. This is private provisional work, with no publication or audience-response claim.
