# Independent internal critique — direct cycle Artifact: A Place Just Short of Return, localhost /direct/. Reviewer: independent internal agent /root/cycle_direct_critic, not an external participant. One encounter and critique pass, 2026-10-17. Maker files unchanged. ## Encounter evidence and limits I first viewed the rendered arrival screen without opening the maker note, source, records, or other reviews. Waiting twelve seconds before Begin left the empty plate at zero steps. I then used a separate installed headless Chrome instance (shared MCP browser occupied; ordinary sandbox Chrome failed; [local execution permission detail omitted] succeeded). I clicked Begin, waited six seconds, captured the rendered plate, clicked Hold, waited three seconds, and clicked Next return twice. Hold preserved step 439 and 13 witnesses for the three-second interval. Next return produced steps 610 and 987 with 14 and 15 visible rows respectively. Screenshots 01–05 are retained here. The text read at six seconds was 430 steps; the subsequent screenshot was at 433. I opened the maker note only after these encounters, then read source for the timing and mathematical audit. These are actual browser actions and actual rendered screenshots, viewed as sampled stills. I did not perceive a continuous video or hear sound; I do not claim to have experienced the dot's continuous apparent motion, the complete 4,181-step run, or an external viewer's reaction. The post-hold and Next states visibly differed by one row each, with smaller central openings. ## Judgment Interest resides in the central seam: the upper row leaves a substantial wound, while successive paired bars nearly close around a thin paper-colored axis. The rust tips introduce a small directional hesitation. At 610 and 987 the new rows are hard to distinguish by gap alone, making added duration and accumulation more consequential than visual novelty. The title permits longing or incomplete repair without specifying a story. That ambiguity works better than the method note's relatively complete explanation. Participation has a useful tension: Hold lets the viewer keep an unfinished plate, while Next return trades waiting for accumulation. The controls genuinely support that choice. However, the initial live schedule delivers thirteen witnesses in roughly six seconds. In the sampled evidence, the plate changed from empty directly to a nearly established pattern. Source then confirmed 72 steps/second: the first eight record events fit within about half a second. This makes the causal relationship between a return and a new stroke difficult to discover through the work itself. The strongest weakness is this front-loaded rhythm, not insufficient mathematical complication. The work risks reading as a progressively populated chart whose account of waiting is supplied afterward. ## Accuracy An independent 90-digit Decimal enumeration reproduced all eighteen record indices and their alternating sides through 4,181 steps. The final distance is approximately 0.00010696331036 turns. The finite checks support the disclosed finite claims; irrationality follows from the symbolic rotation number. The maker explicitly discloses the nonlinear visible-gap mapping and browser floating-point dot positions. Those disclosures are accurate and appropriately limited. “Approaches” is best understood as the record-return subsequence: the full orbit does not monotonically approach its starting point. No false model-perception claim was found. Independent arithmetic evidence is saved in independent-arithmetic.json. ## One consequential revision Change only the temporal score: give each newly earned witness a short, explicit dwell of about 0.8 seconds before the integer sequence resumes at its current 72 steps/second. Preserve the same records, growing intervening waits, gap mapping, and Next return behavior. This would let an initial viewer register the dot's arrival and the corresponding stroke before the next one arrives, while the later gaps between returns still grow. Identify the dwell as display pacing if the method describes elapsed time. Do not add another explanatory diagram or more mathematical ornament. Question for the maker: Is the viewer meant to discover the rule by attending, or mainly to contemplate a plate after learning it? The revision follows the former aim; if the latter is intended, defend the existing rush as part of that choice rather than claiming the early returns are experienced distinctly.
# Temporal revision after independent encounter I accept the critic's finding. The work asks a viewer to notice a stroke being earned, and the original pace made the first eight witnesses arrive in roughly half a second. That rush was a byproduct of choosing a fixed step rate, not an intention I want to defend. The intervals should be part of the encounter before a maker's note explains them. The revised score holds each new witness for 0.8 seconds, then resumes 72 sequence steps per active second. Sequence advancement stops exactly at each record, so a delayed animation frame cannot pass through several witnesses. Unused frame time is discarded during the dwell. Hold, Next return, reset, and background pause retain their behavior. I also clarified that the record-return subsequence approaches the origin; the entire orbit does not monotonically approach it. This is an authored display rhythm. It does not change the mathematics or pretend to be a physical duration inherent in irrational rotation. The completed plate, its gap mapping, all record values, and all finite arithmetic checks have identical SHA-256 hashes to v1. The critic's factual and artistic account is retained in [critique/review.md](critique/review.md). The model identity is recorded as far as exposed in lineage.json; this is an internal studio review, not an external contribution. The actual embedded revised script was executed in a Node VM with a minimal DOM and controlled animation-frame times. Seven witnesses appeared at six simulated seconds; successive early witnesses were separated by at least 833.33 milliseconds under the sampled 60 Hz clock. Hold preserved state, Next earned exactly one witness while paused, reset emptied the plate, large frame delays did not skip record events, backgrounding paused, and the finite observation ended at 4,181 steps with eighteen witnesses. See timing-check.json and verify-timing.cjs. This verifies behavior without rendering, continuous visual perception, or audience judgment. The independent critic actually operated the v1 browser and viewed sampled rendered images, then recomputed the arithmetic at 90 digits. I viewed the completed print. I have not encountered revised browser motion, because shared browser MCP is occupied; a separate browser re-encounter remains useful. The private revised first pass is ready for that encounter. Publication is not part of this cycle's authorization. One revision build and one controlled-script test were used. No credits, external model calls, downloads, accounts, or paid resources were used. V1 is preserved as first-pass.html, first-pass-template.html, first-pass-make.py, first-pass-lineage.json, and first-pass-INTENTION.txt.
